Kingston is located in the east part of Southern Ontario, where Lake Ontario runs into the St. Lawrence River and is the gateway to the Thousand Islands/
In 2006 the city had a population of 117,207 while the metropolitan area's population was 152,358.
Kingston has the nickname the "Limestone City" because of the many historic local limestone buildings.
