The Moving Business

Do you like working with people? Are you able to motivate yourself, meet deadlines, and adapt easily? Have you ever thought you could do a lot better moving people's goods from one place to another than the company you hired to help you?

If you answered yes to all of those questions, then starting a moving company of your own might be an option for you. There is always a need for good movers; people are constantly on the go, from a downtown Toronto condo for rent to a home of their own in Kingston Ontario, from the East coast to the West Coast.

Movers are needed to help people cross municipal, provincial, and international borders. They are trusted with all the goods a family or an individual has accumulated over the course of their lives, and they can make pretty good money through this trust as well.

But, how do you go about starting a moving business? Make no mistake, it's a competitive market. There are dozens of moving companies out there, big and small, looking for work in the same niche you are. How can you get a person moving out of a London Ontario townhouse to phone you instead of them?

Well, the first thing you need to do is assemble a qualified team. Some moving companies consist of just one person. These usually specialize in certain goods, in much the same way a firm conducting an executive search in Toronto will specialize on just one type of individual. They have the equipment or the know how to move pianos or other large furniture, but not much else.

While you can make money in the specialty business, it's not for everyone. More than likely you will need the help of one other individual at least, as well as a good reliable vehicle. Box trucks are sufficient for most moving jobs; you'll want to let potential clients know exactly how much space you have for their items. If needed, you can always find more help and rent vehicles for bigger jobs.

The next thing you need to do is a lot of paperwork. Moving companies handle a lot of valuables every day, so insurance is very important. Even the best can end up putting a corner of a sofa through a window or some other catastrophe, and you want to make sure you are covered.

Advertising will be key to your success in this business. Take advantage of both traditional means (a name on the side of your truck) as well as modern methods, such as social media as represented by a Rosedale blog and so on.

You should also make sure that anyone with real estate training in your area knows about your business. These professionals will work with people who are moving on a regular basis, and if they trust you they will refer clients to you.
